Running for office is a challenging and rewarding experience, but it can also be very different from what first-time candidates expect. Let me tell you, I know from experience. After my first run for Congress, I realized how unprepared I was for the realities of campaigning. That's why I created an online course to help individuals just like you navigate the often-unpredictable world of running for office.
Expectation: Campaigning will be easy.
Reality: Campaigning is hard work.
It requires a lot of time, energy, and dedication. You will need to be able to speak to large groups of people, answer questions, and deal with criticism. You will also need to be able to raise money and organize volunteers. Trust me, it's not as easy as it seems.
Expectation: I will win by a landslide.
Reality: Winning an election is never a sure thing.
Even if you are running in a district that is heavily partisan, there is no guarantee that you will win. You will have to work hard to get your message out and earn the support of voters. Don't get too comfortable, it's a tough game.
Expectation: I will be able to change things immediately.
Reality: Changing things takes time.
Even if you are elected, you will not be able to accomplish everything you want to do right away. You will need to work with other elected officials and build coalitions to get things done. It's a marathon, not a sprint.
Expectation: I will be able to stay true to my principles.
Reality: Running for office requires compromise.
You will not be able to please everyone all the time. You will need to be able to work with people who disagree with you and make compromise where necessary. It's about finding common ground.
Running for office is not an easy task, it requires a lot of hard work and dedication, and it is not always what one expects. The key is to be prepared for challenges, learn from them, and stay true to your principles. If you’re seriously considering it, we recommend downloading our Campaign Readiness Checklist.
